Grad Faculty Meeting

Profile of a Fairmont State University Graduate Student

Students accepted in a graduate program at Fairmont State University should be competent in the use of critical analysis and proficient in their chosen undergraduate field of study. To be successful at the graduate level students must have initiative, good organizational skills, good communication skills, and be both hard working and flexible. At the graduate level students should “demonstrate a level of academic accomplishment and subject mastery substantially beyond that required for the baccalaureate degree.1” The graduate programs will help students develop the following profile, based on the Council for Graduate School’s policy statement.

Students should be able to

  1. develop the ability to think logically and consistently;

  2. integrate and synthesize knowledge;

  3. access up-to-date knowledge and information within the discipline;

  4. communicate in a clear, consistent, and logical manner, both orally and in writing;

  5. understand the interrelationships between their discipline and others;

  6. gain awareness of and prepare to deal with ethical dilemmas within their profession;
  7. apply their knowledge of the discipline to real-life situations;

  8. increasingly adapt to the dynamic requirements of their profession and their workplace.

Question:
How true is this? Master's program graduates academic accomplishments and subject mastery should go "substantially beyond" Baccalaureates'.

  • It is a mixed bag: Content wise yes they go beyond.
  • "The requirements aren't beyond, yet below and that needs to be addressed first"
  • "Our standards are lower by definition."
